Quebec City, May 9, 2012 –– In accordance with an order issued today by the government of Québec, the Chief Electoral Officer, Jacques Drouin, must hold an election on Monday, June 11, 2012 in the electoral divisions of Argenteuil and LaFontaine. Here are a few important dates for the electoral period:

Voting by mail for electors temporarily absent from Quebec
Québec City, April 26, 2012 –– Mr. Jacques Drouin, Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, wishes to inform Québec electors who are currently staying outside Québec, or are about to do so, that they can register effective immediately to avail themselves of voting by mail at the time of a general election, a by-election or a referendum.

Municipal by-election on June 3, 2012, for a position of Councillor in Lac-Brome
Québec City, April 20, 2012 – A municipal by-election will be held in Lac-Brome on June 3 next, to fill the position of councillor in electoral district number 4. In accordance with the time limits laid out in the Act respecting elections and referendums in municipalities, individuals wishing to run as candidates in this by-election have until May 4, to submit their nomination papers to Mr. Jacques Bourret, the returning officer.

Municipal by-election on April 1, 2012, for a position of Councillor in Beaconsfield
Québec City, February 17, 2012 – A municipal by-election will be held in Beaconsfield on April 1 next, to fill the position of councillor in electoral district number 4. In accordance with the time limits laid out in the Act respecting elections and referendums in municipalities, individuals wishing to run as candidates in this by-election have until March 2, to submit their nomination papers to Mrs. Helen Finn, the returning officer.

The Commission de la représentation électorale publishes its final report concerning Québec's new electoral map
Quebec City, February 14, 2012 – With today’s tabling of its final report, the Commission de la représentation électorale (CRE) has completed the process of revising Québec’s electoral map. The document entitled People are Moving, the Electoral Map is Changing – Québec’s Electoral Map for 2011 – Final Report follows the publication of the list of the 125 new electoral divisions in the Gazette officielle du Québec on October 20, 2011.

Updating of penalties for offences under the Election Act
The National Assembly recently increased many of the fines for offences against the provisions governing voting, political party financing and the control of election expenses. The increases were triggered by a variety of circumstances, and clearly illustrate the importance ascribed by the National Assembly to the Election Act.

In anticipation of the municipal general elections of November 2013 - Over 250 Québec municipalities will draw up their electoral map this year
Quebec City, January 26, 2012 – The Chief Electoral Officer of Québec and Chair of the Commission de la représentation électorale (CRE), Jacques Drouin, would like to point out that, in accordance with the Act respecting elections and referendums in municipalities (AERM), over 250 municipalities have to draw up their electoral map for the general elections of November 2013 by May 31, 2012.

104 polling stations will be open on polling day

Quebec City, November 30, 2011 –– Concerning the by-election in the electoral division of Bonaventure, to be held  on Monday, December 5, 2011, the Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Jacques Drouin, is reporting that  a total of 104 polling stations, spread over 33 polling places,  will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m..

Press release No. 9 – By-election of December 5, 2011 in Bonaventure - A first in Québec: the electors of Bonaventure will use a photo ballot paper

Quebec City, November 25, 2011 – For the first time in a Québec provincial election, the electors of the electoral division of Bonaventure will use a ballot paper that includes the photos of the candidates running in the by-election of December 5, 2011. Upon the recommendation of the Chief Electoral Officer, an agreement reached by the political parties represented at the National Assembly will make it possible to try out this alternative voting procedure. The goal is to make it simpler for certain electors to participate in the electoral process, in particular senior citizens, the disabled and the functionally illiterate.
