Current and upcoming elections

Summary

Provincial, municipal and school board general elections are usually held every four years. By-elections may be held between general elections.

Provincial

By-elections

No by-elections are scheduled at this time.

The next by-election will be held on [date 0] in this electoral division:

General elections

The next Québec provincial general election is scheduled for October 5, 2026.

General elections are held on the first Monday in October of the fourth year following the last election. An early general election may be held before that date. At the request of the government, the Lieutenant Governor may terminate the mandate of MNAs and order a general election to be held. In this case, the Premier will choose the polling date.

The date of a general election may be postponed in accordance with the terms and conditions set forth in the Election Act. This may occur if, for example, the election period overlaps with the federal or municipal general election period. The Chief Electoral Officer may also postpone the date of an election by one week when a major disaster or other serious and unforeseeable situation occurs.

General elections allow for the election of a Member of the National Assembly (MNA) in each of Québec's 125 electoral divisions. Elected officials represent voters in the National Assembly. The election period lasts between 33 and 39 days.

Municipal

General elections

The next municipal general election in Québec will be held on November 2, 2025.

The Act respecting elections and referendums in municipalities stipulates that municipal general elections be held in all Québec municipalities every four years on the first Sunday in November.

By-elections

Municipal by-elections may be held when a councillor or mayor position becomes vacant.

  • If the position becomes vacant more than 12 months before the next scheduled municipal general election date, the returning officer of the municipality is required to call a by-election to fill the vacancy.
  • If the position becomes vacant less than 12 months before the municipal general election date, the municipal council may decide whether or not a by-election will be held.

The returning officer sets the date of the by-election, which must be held on a Sunday no more than four months after the municipal council has been informed that the position is vacant.

Élections Québec must communicate information on current by-elections or those that have occured in the last three months in all Québec's municipalities.

For further information, please contact the returning officer for each municipality. If necessary, use Québec's Répertoire des municipalités by the ministère des Affaires municipales et de l'Habitation.

School

General elections

School elections are held every four years. The next school general election in Québec will be held on November 3, 2024.

The Act respecting school elections to elect certain members of the boards of directors of English-language school service centres provides that school elections are to be held only in English-language school boards.
