Referendums

Summary

In Québec, referendums are consultative. They have been governed by the Referendum act since 1978.

Public consultation

Referendums allow the public to express its opinion on an issue or a bill adopted by the Assemblée national. The government conducts this consultation by means of a poll in the same manner as a general election.

Instructions by writ

A writ issued by the government and addressed to the Chief Electoral Officer indicates the date of the referendum and the issue that will be submitted to public consultation.

Other resources

The Charter of the French language and its regulations govern the consultation of English-language content.
